WORLD SUMMIT ON ENERGY TRANSITION

SPONSORS:

JUST TRANSITION

The World Summit on Energy Transition delivers a cross-cutting approach involving fundamental pillars for a just transition, such as decarbonization, energy efficiency, conscious consumption, public policies and justice, and the carbon market. These are all crucial elements to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

  • 1. SUBSTITUTION OF SOURCES
  • 2. ENERGY EFFICIENCY
  • 3. CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION
  • 4 REGULATION AND JUSTICE
  • 5. CARBON MARKET

The transition to renewable energy sources is crucial in combating climate change, as emissions from fossil fuels are one of the biggest causes of global warming. Replacing these sources with clean alternatives can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while promoting a sustainable future. However, this change requires investment in infrastructure, technological innovation and support from public policies that encourage the use of these new energies in an accessible and efficient way.

Practical actions to change energy sources in the context of climate change:

• Encourage the adoption of solutions based on renewable energy.

• Promote the expansion of wind and solar farms in areas with generation potential.

• Encourage the use of electric vehicles and the creation of infrastructure for battery charging.

• Invest in research and development of renewable energy storage technologies, such as advanced batteries.

Energy efficiency is one of the fundamental pillars in the fight against climate change, as it involves using less energy to perform the same activities. By improving efficiency in the residential, industrial and transport sectors, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve natural resources. This approach also brings economic benefits, reducing energy costs and stimulating technological innovation, as well as being a crucial element in the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

Practical actions to increase energy efficiency in the context of climate change:

• Use equipment and construction solutions with energy efficiency by design.

•Implement LED lighting systems, which consume less energy and are more durable.

• Perform regular maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to optimize their performance.

• Promote the construction of buildings and houses with energy efficiency standards, such as thermal insulation and natural ventilation systems.

• Encourage the use of public transport and active modes (biking, walking), reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.

Conscious consumption is a fundamental pillar in the fight against climate change, as it involves adopting habits that reduce the waste of energy and natural resources. By making more sustainable choices in our daily lives, we can reduce the demand for polluting energy sources and encourage ecological practices throughout the production chain.

This change in behavior not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also promotes a culture of environmental responsibility essential for the energy transition and the preservation of the planet.

Practical actions to promote conscious consumption in the context of climate change:

• Choose energy-efficient products, such as appliances with an energy efficiency label.

• Turn off electronic devices when not in use and avoid leaving them on standby mode.

• Reduce the use of heated water by taking shorter showers and using economical programs on washing machines.

• Choose sustainable transport, such as walking, cycling or using public transport instead of private vehicles.

• Consume responsibly, avoiding food waste and preferring local and seasonal products.

Public policies are essential to drive the energy transition and tackle climate change, as they establish the guidelines and incentives needed to develop a low-carbon economy. Governments have a crucial role to play in creating regulations that encourage the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency and the adoption of clean technologies. In addition, effective policies can direct investment towards sustainable infrastructure and ensure social inclusion in this process, promoting a balance between economic growth, social protection and environmental preservation.

Practical actions to strengthen public policies in the context of climate change:

• Encourage the use of renewable energy, such as solar and wind, facilitating the transition to clean sources.

• Implement national emissions reduction targets, aligned with international commitments, such as the Paris Agreement.

• Create regulations for the construction of sustainable buildings, requiring energy efficiency standards and lower environmental impact.

• Establish social programs that allow more vulnerable communities to generate income from energy generation from renewable sources.

• Establish incentives for industries and companies that adopt low-carbon technologies and more energy-efficient processes.

The carbon market is an important tool for mitigating climate change by assigning an economic value to greenhouse gas emissions. This mechanism allows companies that emit less carbon to sell their emission credits to those that need to offset their emissions, creating a financial incentive to reduce environmental impact. By limiting the total emissions allowed, the carbon market promotes the transition to cleaner and more efficient technologies, helping to achieve global emissions reduction targets and strengthen the commitment to sustainable development.

Practical actions to boost the carbon market in the context of climate change:

• Implement clear regulations that set carbon emissions limits for strategic industries and sectors.

• Create carbon credit trading platforms, facilitating the purchase and sale between companies that need to offset their emissions.

• Encourage companies to participate in the carbon market by offering tax benefits to those that adopt clean technologies.

• Promote transparency in the carbon market by ensuring that emissions and offsets are properly verified and reported.

• Develop education and awareness programs so that companies and consumers understand how the carbon market works and its importance in the fight against climate change.
